Project FleX-RAY joins the Photonic Days Berlin Brandenburg 2022

Between 5-6 October 2022, a distinguished innovation conference, the Photonic Days Berlin Brandenburg 2022, took place in Berlin. The event included 7 one-day and 2 half-day workshops, along with exhibitions and ample networking opportunities. Additionally, on the 4th and 7th of October, lab tours took place for the attendees. This year, more than 270 participants attended the exhibition and workshops throughout the event. Overall, the annual event aims to promote scientific advancements by the companies, institutes and specialists from the regional and international community. Ultimately, the Photonic Days are created to form a universal value chain of professionals from different sectors and regions to strengthen the physical science of light waves.

The FleX-RAY consortium was represented by Jannis Koch from the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute (Goslar), who spread the word about the scientific advancements around our project’s flexible X-Ray imaging detector. More specifically, on the 5th of October, he was part of the workshop called “Making waveguides for photonic system integration”, where he gave a speech on “Femtosecond laser pulse processing of waveguides and Bragg gratings for sensors in thin glass and glass fibres”. The main focus of his presentation was to analyse the use of ultra-thin glass as a curvature sensor and how a network of such curvature sensors can be used to measure the shape of a surface. Apart from its technical part, the presentation shed light on the FleX-RAY mission and the consortium’s aspirations around the project’s future. After the speech, members of the audience addressed the advantages of the FleX-RAY technologies and the possibility of applying ultra-thin glass for optical sensing in other industrial sectors.
